Multicultural Community Relations and its newsletter, Rice At Large, in the Office of Public Affairs won three awards in a competition sponsored by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education in November.
Every year, CASE recognizes its members with the annual Best of District IV Award, which includes colleges and universities in the Southwest. CASE District IV represents more than 2,900 members from 260 collegiate institutions in Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. This annual award program recognizes its members for their excellent work in the areas of alumni relations, communications and philanthropy.
MCR won two awards in the category of profile writing of less than 1,000 words. The two stories, “Education Offers Choices” and “Making the World Better With Music,” appeared on the covers of Rice At Large in spring 2023 and fall 2023.
The third award was for in-person, multiday special events. In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, which ran from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, MCR hosted several events. These events included faculty lectures, a two-weekend film festival, a concert showcasing Rice mariachi and Tejano music, a dance group, and a conference on the Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges.
Melinda Spaulding Chevalier, vice president for Public Affairs, thanked her MCR team for its diligence in sharing Rice’s story of community engagement. “The CASE recognition expands our opportunity to make our friends and colleagues aware of the university outreach and service efforts to the communities of Houston.”
Rice At Large is a quarterly newsletter that showcases the university’s outreach programs. Each issue of the newsletter contains a series of stories that raise awareness of Rice’s engagement with the city and beyond. The two award-winning stories featured members of the Rice community who personalize Rice’s outreach and service activity.
